Access to quality education is a key element in the struggle against child labor in the cocoa industry.
While they are at school, children are not working on cocoa farms, and education gives them a better chance to shape their own future. Tuition fees are an expense that few farming families can afford. They also tend to come at a bad time: just before the harvest, when money is scarce. The school fund addresses the problem by providing social loans for farmers, so they can pay for their child’s education. In light of the success of the school fund in Ivory Coast, we have now set up a school fund in Ghana together with a local partner.
